Drops Of Rain Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Drops Of Rain

Rating: 5.0

There are as many realities
As there are drops of rain
In a sudden summer shower,
Catching the light and refracting it
In infinite, separate rainbows
And then projecting it as one
Onto a still bright sky
Before dissipating
As if they never existed.

Each of us takes in a tiny fraction
Of what is actually happening,
Filters it through our own prejudices and preferences
And then forgets most of what little we perceived.

And yet we say insist on our version of events
And we reject any evidence that contradicts
Our own fragile convictions of what we have witnessed
For fear that in losing our grasp on our personal reality
The world itself shifts and cracks like tectonic plates
Leaving us adrift on some new tiny continent.

I suppose I will let myself float
On these insistent seas
Surrounded by water and light
That only leave me thirsty and half blind
In hopes of reaching some new shore
To cling to and thrive,
Safe from the fires and storms
I have left behind.

There is so much truth in what you say! I was fascinated by your train of thought. This poem is very well put together.

We are prone to stick to our understandings and not deviate from them under any circumstance, as the poet says: 'For fear that in losing our grasp on our personal reality The world itself shifts and cracks like tectonic plates Leaving us adrift on some new tiny continent'. Congratulations to the poet for conceptualizing her thoughts and presenting them to us through this poem in such a beautiful way! The poem gets full marks from me,5/5.

Although the title of the poem is 'Drops Of Rain', the poem is not, in fact, about the drops of atmospheric rain but about 'many realities' of life which fall upon us like the drops of rain and which we see with our own individual perceptions and convictions. We tend to conceive these realities in our own different ways and explain them with our own 'prejudices and preferences'. (to be continued...)

Great poem with depth and reality. A sort of philosophical write that makes interesting reading. Thanks for sharing.
