Capital Punishment Poem by Christopher Montalvo

Capital Punishment

Convicted men,
Spend years on death row,
Another evil trend,
Court deems it a 'legal' homicide,
Brings the same level of sorrow.

One more injection,
Expels all form of hope,
No form of protection,
No possible way to cope.
Fading into the darkness,
Steady tears stream,
Trying to hold on,
To one last dream.
This ill-fated day,
Where revenge is gained,
And another breath is taken away.

Fateful witnesses,
Some happy, some mad,
But everyone agreed,
The process was tragic and sad.

Dead and cold,
Left behind a story untold,
A wretched duty to uphold,
Their future never allowed to unfold.

Body wheeled to another room,
Became another statistic,
While the rest of the world resumes,
Another tortured soul,
Wiped off the face of the earth,
Someone's father,
Someone's mother,
Someone's child,
Someone's friend,
Someone's spouse,
Awaited their fate in a jailhouse,
Someone's sibling,
Someone's aunt,
Someone's uncle,
Someone's niece
Someone's nephew,
Severe heartache that all have endured.

Regrets from their past,
Wishing to change the present,
But no second chance in their future.
