Behind Her Eyes Poem by Susan Williams

Behind Her Eyes

Rating: 4.9

.
Behind her eyes
do you see
a deep blue good-bye
or is it
just a trick of light.
.
Behind her eyes
do you see
it's Open Season
and maybe just maybe
this is where it all ends.
.
Behind his eyes
do you see
fire ants of hate
or is it
just the he she's never known
.
Behind his eyes
do you see
a gathering of sharp objects
or is it just
a sickness of shadows
.
Behind the closed door
do you see
random acts of war
or are they
just playing with fire.
.
Behind closed doors
do you think
they've gone beyond the limits
or is it all
just a test of wills
.
Behind her eyes
...........................Behind his eyes
Behind closed doors
...........................Behind high walls
is it
is it time
to be afraid
to at last be afraid
that they will end their endless strife
and there'll soon be 412 bones
lurching across the Great Divide
or
worse
is it time
to be afraid
to at long long last be afraid
that caught in a state of siege
they are forever trapped
in their dark paradise lost
in their bitter promised land.

Some relationship seem continually on the edge of destruction with repeated battles of will but somehow survive, though locked in their bitter promised land . That last phrase shows what a fine poet you are, Susan. It is a most fascinating poem and you make it frighteningly real.

critiquer is certainly good French! Critique is good English so critiquer (as a person who applies as critique) seems pretty respectable to me. Maybe you should check this at Oxford. If it's not in their list I bet they'd consider it for inclusion. I would anyway!

Thank you, Tom, you are very kind as well as a perceptive critiquer [spell check doesn't seem to think that is a word but I swear that it is... in either this universe or in an alternative universe... after all, we now have alternative truth.......] Thank you Tom for always spurring me on to write better by your take on what I have done.

Tom, oh mighty Critiquer, I wish you were the head of Oxford... I would love to see the list they'd put out then! ! ! ;)
