Baseball In Heaven

Rating: 5.0

Young Bert and Kent were baseball nuts
and played it all the time.
They were, of course, quite good at it,
since each was in his prime.

One day Bert said, "I wonder, friend,
if when this life is through,
they'll have baseball in heaven there?
Oh, I hope that is true! "

The chums agreed the first to die
would come and tell his friend
if baseball would continue there,
or would come to an end.

One night that old Grim Reaper came
and snapped up poor young Kent,
and unexpected though it seemed,
he was to Glory sent.

Before too many weeks had passed,
Kent was allowed to come
on back to Earth to talk to Bert,
who had been feeling glum.

"We have baseball up there, " he said.
"It seems you got that right,
and pal, I have good news for you:
you pitch tomorrow night! "

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Written 2 April 2019

This poem took First Place in Category 8 (Humor)
in the 2019 Arizona State Poetry Society Annual Contest.

I just found out on 12 December 2019 (two days ago)
that it had won.

The Arizona State contest is unusual, because you can enter more than one poem in each category. Most of the contests only allow you to submit one poem per category.

What a shock it was when I also took Second Place with "Dying for a Cookie" and Third Place with "Terrified Taxi Driver"! I swept all the cash prizes in the category! In addition, another poem, "Absolution", took Second Honorable Mention.

OK, i KNOW,3 STRIKES and i'm out. : ( i did laugh heartily at the last line. well, it seems to me that being reunited with his pal and playing ball in heaven would be acceptable...to a " nut" . bri ;)

1 - " or would come to an end." HOW ABOUT: " or if in heaven it would end." 2 - and how about changing: " and unexpected though it seemed, " to: " and, though it was unexpected, " and: 3 - " on back to Earth to talk to Bert, " delete " on" ?
