POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem Hunter/ Robert Graves/ poems/ 12/141.
The quatrains have an 'abcb' pattern.
The poem is a trenchant criticism of English men, who are impossible, bad-tempered, depraved, illiterate, and sly. The men are not worthy of the 'lovely, gifted girls ' whom they have married. The men take no pride in their clothes and personal appearance. The poet ends by asking himself whether or not he favours women at the expense of men. Modestly he says, 'It might be so'. But I think Graves' criticism of men is so right.
