Torture Poem by Alice Walker

Torture

Rating: 3.4

When they torture your mother
plant a tree
When they torture your father
plant a tree
When they torture your brother
and your sister
plant a tree
When they assassinate
your leaders
and lovers
plant a tree
Whey they torture you
too bad
to talk
plant a tree.
When they begin to torture
the trees
and cut down the forest
they have made
start another.

A must read. The juxtaposition between mindless violence and rebuilding, between rage and wisdom, between death and affirmation of life.... between no and yes. Plant a seed... maybe of love, maybe of justice, maybe a tree.. but plant and nourish and grow.

Planting trees perhaps couldn't be the remedy or resisting doctrine against torture. It listens nice but not logical. Our recent civilization stands by ruining trees. And we should think of another human society less by torture for human not for the forests and wilds only. I'll never prefer to plant tree against torture, better try to think the return as at least Jesus did by forgiving the criminals with a pleasing smile which could kill a person mentally to its extreme death..................The poem listens nice and feel the poet intelligent not by telling lie.

A tree planted on every such occasion as mentioned in the poem, will stand as a witness in God's Court and bear testimony to the torture inflicted. This is my extended thought on this nice poem.

This is such a remarkable, beautiful poem. It reminds us that no matter how we are cast down, we can build up, and when what we have built up is destroyed, we can begin to build anew.
