Thoughts Like Clouds Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Thoughts Like Clouds

Rating: 4.0

Thoughts are like clouds
Decorating our mental sky
Protecting us from direct light
Screening out what we don’t want to see
And setting limits on the heights we need to reach.

The universe seems more cozy, less imposing
When the world is wrapped in a blanket of white.
We can look up at the sky and not feel so tiny.
We can tell ourselves that our perspective is complete.

But, really, there is so much to life that we can’t see.
There is so much to reality that we don’t perceive.
The universe is vaster than our capacity to imagine.
We are as meaningless in the whole as a mote of dust.

There are no angels sitting in the clouds
Looking down on us, either in sympathy or judgment.
When the sky clears and we are alone with that truth,
We are left with two choices: to accept what is real or defend what is not.

If you choose to see dragons in the clouds, go out and slay them.
If you choose to see castles, go out and claim them.
If you see Heaven’s Gates, patiently wait for death.
But if you can look at the clear sky without blinking, live!

Live fully with the knowledge that you are your own judge and jailer.
Live fully with the knowledge that you may be as temporary as a raindrop.
Live fully with the knowledge that you may never be granted a glimpse
Of some higher truth that will free your soul from this ring of existence.

And you may find that as the clouds clear from your mind
And you accept your place in the greater scheme of things
You will experience the awe that this awareness brings
And find inner peace nestled inside your own insignificance.
