The Ghosts Are Walking Again Poem by Susan Williams

The Ghosts Are Walking Again

Rating: 4.9

.
the ghosts are walking again
walking and talking in the night again
sorrow is eating my bones again
.
the fog is creeping again
creeping and seeping through the cracks again
fear is fracturing my bones again
.
the shadows are whispering again
whispering and weeping by my bed again
despair is sundering my bones again
.
the ghosts are walking again
the fog is creeping again
the shadows are whispering again
.
..............and I?
..............I'm feeling like dust again
..............the unknown is leaching the marrow out of my bones again
.

Hi Susan, This is a great work. There is some very violent imagery, but also a kind of symmetry. It is all about the unseen, the intangible, the evanescent which can't be grasped but which is balanced by its own power to leave lasting physical scars. Interesting that you leave wide-open the issue of the origins of those ethereal elements. Are they psychological? Social? Other worldly? Could you be talking about fate? Or is this about chance, which has the power to alter life? It only takes a split second before fear and despair become companions because bones have become fractured and sundered. There is a real beauty to this verse....the rhyme, and rhythm....Way off the charts....way, way more than a 10!

Mj, thank you so very much for the intense reading you gave this poem. It has been a huge learning experience to see what the fine poets on this site see in this. No wonder you all are so talented- I am humbled by the amount of thought you took and the depths you plumbed. Your critique is amazing and reveals why your poems are so powerful. Thank you for all your kind words and the WoW 10! ! ! !

To me, your again signifies that the fear, as expressed by terms like ghosts, night, fog, whispering and cracks, you have experienced some day, is going to recur, for what ever reason and you are horrified to face it. It sounds that it is going to cause you pain as you express it with terms like eating my bones, fracturing my bones and sundering my bones. All these are real life experiences across the globe. What you intend communicating to the reader is well understood by the readership all over, in my opinion, for the really simple diction, and appropriate metaphoric expressions you have used. My only worry is, why is that you opt to surrender as expressed by feeling like dust.... to a mental situation as conditioned just by a past experience. , if it was so. What ever it may be, you have been able to make all your readers feel just the thing you felt yourself. This is your cleverness as a poet. I wish I too was able to write like you. Nothing less than maximum marks from me. Thanks for inviting me to read and comment.

I have read so many insightful intelligent comments on this poem today- - you and the other poets on this site are obviously sensitive and rewarding people and I am thankful that I have the opportunity to get to know you.. And you, Jayatissa, certainly know how to pick the bones of a poem's structure and get every last meaning there is. I can see the concern you have that the opt taken was to surrender- - by my use of the word dust I meant to awaken echoes of the phrase - -dust to dust and ashes to ashes. Rereading it I can see it wasn't clear enough- thank you for pointing out that deficit- -I need to find a different way to word that thought. Thank you for your kind comments but quite frankly I give you maximum marks for your critiquing and quite frankly I would love inviting you to read and comment on everything I write. If you write critiques this well, you have to be writing superb poetry and I think I will just mosey on over to your poetry page and read a few!
