The City Poem by Langston Hughes

The City

Rating: 5.0

In the morning the city
Spreads its wings
Making a song
In stone that sings.

In the evening the city
Goes to bed
Hanging lights
Above its head.

The man can paint a picture and a mood with so few well chosen words.

Not a very apt account, nonetheless there's an inherent sweetness in this short piece that attracts the attention.

I get the feeling, from his writing, that Hughes loved the city. This is one of his most poignant works, but again, short and to-the-point. Two stanzas and he made you feel how much he loved the city life. I wish I had a quarter of his talent.

This work describes 24 hours of life in the city with 28 words. What a work of art!

The last line contains an error. The original poem says About its head. - not above. Please check the Collected Poems of Langston Hughes (ed. Arnold Rampersad)
