The Bereaved Father Poem by ANJANDEV ROY

The Bereaved Father

Poor Banku lived in a remote village with his little daughter, Bina,
It was very difficult for him to spend his livelihood,
One day he decided to go to another state for a job,
So he came to a busy railway station of a town with his daughter,
They were already late,
Father and daughter tried to board a moving train which was bound for their destination,
Accidentally the daughter fell under the train and immediately died.
Since then Banku had become insane
And he lived in that congested station,
He roamed here and there of the station with unshaven face and long hair and tried to find out her little daughter,
Whenever he saw a little girl,
He ran to her and said, "My little daughter, Bina, "
"I am not your daughter, " immediately he got the answer,
Banku became sad and dejected and murmured, "Oh! I see."
Even now after twenty years of the dreadful incident,
He believed his daughter is still little, very little.
I heard about Banku from many people,
That day I went to see him with a heavy heart,
When I asked him, "How are you Banku? "
He stared at me anxiously and said,
"Have you seen my Bina, my little daughter? "
He made a gesture to convince me the word 'little' calmly and affectionately,
I remained speechless and tears came in my eyes'
I didn't know how to console the bereaved father,
Only I prayed to the God to soothe his tragic soul,
Then I slowly returned home with a grievous heart.
