Switches …… [not Just For Electricians! ; Definitions Of ‘switch', Explored; Medium Length; Rhyming Exercise (As Most Of Mine Are) ] Poem by Bri Edwards

I'm sitting here now ….just killing time,
so I think I'll just play at making a rhyme …..
or two …..or three?

I was considering a poem about a nearby doorknob,
but that'd be as boring as one …..about a little watch fob.
Then nearby I spied a light switch on the white wall;
I can surely write about switches, if I don't "drop the ball".

What does the word "switch" bring to my mind?
"Sort of" two words, one a verb, and one ….of the noun-kind.
And several meanings there are among the words, too.
It's enough to make an English-as-a-second-language student turn blue.

OK. The light switch, a noun, for turning on-and-off a light.
It could as well be another switch used by pilots in flight.
A tool I guess you could call it, though it "don't" look like much.
Switches control many things, with the help of your touch.

And "switch", as a verb, can mean the act of using a switch.
So you can switch OFF or ON a switch, and you (or I) can choose which.

Another noun-word "switch" is one no longer heard of much,
and, again, it has something to do with using the word "touch".
In years past, I've read of branches or sticks called hickory switches,
which were used to thrash bottoms, sometimes without the protection of britches.
In this sense I don't think "switch" was also used as a verb-word.
If it ever was, I've forgotten, or else ………………its use I never heard.

Lastly, "switch" can be used when referring to replacing one thing with another.
An example: "If I had a baby sister I might want to switch it for a baby brother."
The ACT of making the replacement would be a noun-use of switch,
while the ACTION of replacing would be a verb-word. Ain't English a bitch? !
