Sundance Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Sundance

Sundance

“Show and tell”
Our topic of the day,
“In Cree”

She wrote lines
First in the syllabics,
Then explained.

She had seen her cousin named Jimmie.
One heading for class and other,
To Sundance.

“How do you revive and reinvent? ”
I questioned:
“After years and decades, centuries.”

Neither she,
Nor I or classmates,
Had clue.

She talked of what had heard.
Sad it was …
“I lost them to school…”

Her knowledge limited, as is mine
“Origin destroyed; spirit is alive.”

And the rest clear
Like our past till Yaqoub…
And his words:

“Hey Caliph…”
“Under sun and the moon I sleep.”
“Some salt and onion is my food.”

But here until now
Hasn’t been a Yaqub.
To have been successful.

The schools and murders and burnings
And looting and the laws are all shame.
