Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Poem by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

In grade 7, back in 1977, my teacher assigned " memory work" , every week. The goal as I recall was to recite 1000 lines of poetry over the school year. Students chose their poems. This was my favourite. I can feel the solitude and sentiment, and picture the images as the words unfold this scene. The pictures in my mind play out the same now as then.(Report)Reply

A spectacular poem, by an even spectacular poet! Robert Frost has a way with words, and it is only through them that he has lived on after all these years. I had never read " stopping by woods.." ever, until right now. A serene poem, by an author, who has reveled in motivational tranquility.

Richard, will you please direct us to your magnum opus or collection of substantial works that we might better understand your own qualifications regarding the appreciation and creation of poetry?(Report)Reply

    Hello there Patrick,
Just go to my poems and you will see my tips on how to write a Robert Frost Masterpiece; your topic must be facile, fatuous and you use a nursery rhyme style iambic pentameter, but twist the banal to appear monumentally important.

That this numb skull still gets praise for his stupid attempts at poetry demeans his admirers, and his ranking on this site is ridiculous; his monomaniacal doggerel should be consigned to the dustbin of history; his work makes Mills and Boons novels look like masterpieces.(Report)Reply

Robert, may we ask what is your magnum opus or collection of substantial works that we may understand your qualification regarding the creation and appreciation of poetry?

    Patrick Soch(3/28/2020 8:41:00 PM)

Richard, may we ask what is your own magnum opus or collection of your own great works that we should trust in your skill at poetry and/or its appreciation?

    Patrick Soch(3/28/2020 8:39:00 PM)

Richard, where's your magnum opus, may we ask? Or some collection of your great works we might reference to understand the depth of your understanding of poetry, either the appreciation thereof or its actual creation or both?

I am sorry but your comment Richard ponsby made me laugh out loud. Of course, you are allowed your own opinion (even if it is a silly opinion, in my opinion) but I completely disagree. It seems you can do better, so why haven't I seen your poem everywhere with people praising it? It seems to me, you're a hypocrite. You haven't written a poem anywhere nearly as famous as this one, and still you criticise. Eh, each to his/her/their own!
