State Of Emergence Poem by onyinye onwuka

State Of Emergence

The tale of a people, naturally grafted in strength and vigour
A people of rare quintessence of bravery and pride
Wrapped in purity and fertility as a symbol of rejuvenation
The green, white, green people!
Once towering over and above their peers in and outside the mainland
Now ridiculed across the land and yonder
The dwarfed giant of Africa, basking in yester-years glory
The green, white, green people!
The founding fathers groan and suppurate in their sleep
They watch in torment the obliteration of the labours of heroes past
The unborn cohort fear to be birthed into the voracious hands of the monarchs of the land
The green, white, green people!
And yet the wicked monarchs, intensify ravages on the secretion of today's inhabitants
Consuming the granary reserved for the unborn and
Denigrating the perspiration of our heroes past
The green, white, green people!
And now the organised sound of change is heard, signalling a state of emergency
A race against time! An urgent call for weeding, clearing and cleansing
Insisting on restitution from the generational killers of the once-giant nation
The green, white, green people!
Who will salvage the souls of the living, atone the spirit of the dead and the unborn?
Who has empathy and passion to ascend to power and lift the state of emergency?
Who will bring smiles again to the melancholy and despondent faces of today's generation?
And reinstate the bliss of the green, white, green people!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem at the airport, while waiting for my flight back to Nigeria. I was impressed that although the country I visited had suffered civil conflict, in the past, much progress had been attained in terms of development and recovery. Conversely, I became depressed about the sectorial despondency in my country Nigeria and hence the urgency for lift the figurative state of emergence through good governance.
