Song For A Dark Girl

Way Down South in Dixie
(Break the heart of me)
They hung my black young lover
To a cross roads tree.

Way Down South in Dixie
(Bruised body high in air)
I asked the white Lord Jesus
What was the use of prayer.

Way Down South in Dixie
(Break the heart of me)
Love is a naked shadow
On a gnarled and naked tree.

The refrain 'Way Down South in Dixie' is effective. In the South, the worst crimes against negroes
took place. Like the hanging of her young black lover.

What hurts the most is that Christ was not white, but that's how most Europeans see Him, because that's how He was portrayed in art. And because of that, the speaker in this poem feels disconnected from Him during a time of evil and tragedy. And too many white people felt justified because they envisioned a God who looked like them, but not like their neighbors.

Truly what was the use of prayers since HE could not save her but a Black Jesus could have done.
