Roma Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Roma

Roma

Though many, too varied,
No one knows, nobody,
The life of the gypsies,
In its core, beginning.

Once I read of Cossacks
In Russia of Tsars…

Rich it was in roughness
But soft like flowers.

Similar was reading
The slaves, escaping.

As a child of mountains,
Escapees' descendent…

In my mind, they like birds
Find their way out of cage.

Like tattoo on my heart
I carry our village
"Freedom, " my last name.

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

Freedom is heaven
With hardship,
Even death.

Always read "Dogs and wolves"
Of greatest poet
Whose poems I respect
Far beyond gold and wealth.

The dogs get warmth and bones
But live in leash and rein,
The wolves fight with hunger
In the cold, and snow of plains.

This is what did parents
Of parents of parents,
My great ancestors.

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

Therefore, I feel Roma
The Koli or Gypsy
Whatever you call them.

This is what I can see
In North West, prairie.

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

For that we are: "Cousins"
Nassy, with: "The Cree."

Yes, we ran after food,
On our heads our houses,
We trapped, caught, hunted.

But we know what it means
To sing song: "Live free."

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

This is how it has been
From birth,
Before then,
Yes, we have chosen way
That we love with respect.

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

For this sake all fighters,
Jamaicans and the rest
Regardless of borders
Are cousins, brothers.

Tip of hat to the birds,
And fishes and to whales
To lions and tigers
To the full wilderness,
Jaguars, elephants,
The largest, smallest.

We, as the siblings
Share same song
And it means:

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!

Go and burn the books of
Jesuits, Pioneers.

Marco polo, Columbus
Are among unaware,
They never dared escape
Since to kings were slaves.

Ignore what they claim:
"We went and discovered."

A long line came here,
All of them are the same,
Coming first or after,
They remained ignorant!

They could not and cannot
Feel the word that we love.

Freedom!
Freedom!
Freedom!
