Mother Told Me Poem by Emmanuel Arunee Mwanza

Mother Told Me

Mother told me
One day you will grow
One day you will be a man
One day you will be without me
You will be someone I can't imagine
Because I see big things for you
Because I see a real man in you
Mother told me so

Mother told me
Never to hurt
Never to hate
Never to ignore people
Because people are your friends
Though they may hurt you
Though they may curse, never ever give a revenge
I asked why,
Mother said, just remember that mother told me so

Mother told me
The world can be ruthless
The world can be sweet
Always take cautions
be cautious
Because I see big things for you
So don't let me down
So don't let the world pull you down
I asked why, she said
Just remember that mother told me to stay focused

Mother told me
Slavery is still active though it has changed
People are being abused
But don't be the abuser
Don't be the wicked
Because I see a real man in you,
Because I never gave birth to a monster
Just remember that mother told me she gave birth to a gentleman

Mother told me
If you marry, love your wife and your children
If you marry, never forget me
Remember, your mother and treat her with respect like you would me
Because, I cared for you as a woman, respect that
Because, I taught you well my son
Always remember as you enter your house that mother told me so

Mother told me
So many things are tempting
Women, money
But strive to do good, love only your wife
But strive to do good, avoid corruption
So she said, mother told me
And I believe that

Mother told me
Never to worry and if I worry to forget quickly
Because, she belongs to a family of survivors
Because, she would not want me to worry
Because, she wants me to be strong like she is only better
Mother told me so, and she was calm as she spoke

Mother told me
Be humble my son
Be respectful my son
Be passionate my son
Be human, but strive to be a better human
Be a lover of justice
Be what your father was but better
Be not what your father was, if I talk about the bad side of his
Just try to be as good as you can
Just try to be the person that you believe you can
Because, as your mother I believe in you

Mother told me so many things
And at times she still tells me
I will always believe my mother
And if am to do good
And if am to be a good man, it is because
Mother told me,
Mother raised a gentleman
And I really want to be the best for me and for her
Because mother told me so
