मेरी मज़ार पर सुनो आंसू बहाना है मना
मैं वहां रहती नहीं. मैं वहां सोती नहीं.
मैं हवा हूँ हज़ारों स्पर्श में रहती प्रवाहमान जो.
मैं हीरा हूँ रोशन जिससे हैं पर्वतों के हिमशिखर.
मैं अनाज की पकी फसल में सूर्य का ही तेज हूँ.
मैं पतझड़ के मौसम की इक शीतल मंद फुहार हूँ.
जब तुम प्रातःकाल के शांत माहौल में जगते हो
मैं हूँ जिसके कारण तुम उठते व काम में लगते हो.
चुपचाप पक्षियों को नभ में जो चक्राकार घुमाता है.
मैं ही वो हूँ जो रातों में लघु तारों को चमकाता है.
मेरी मज़ार पर कभी आओ तो फिर रोना नहीं;
मैं वहां रहती कहाँ हूँ. मैं तो कभी मरी नहीं.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
I like this elegy very much, have done for years. It is sad, appeals to the emotions. Striking repetition of 'I am', and perfect rhymed couplets.

I am very impressed by this elegy, which has authentic emotion. 'Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die'. This would make a good epitaph on a headstone.
The emotional touch of the poem has prompted me to do this translation.
