Goodbye My Friend- Emotional Marriage Break Up

Rating: 4.5

GOODBYE MY FRIEND—THE BREAK UP

It's been twenty years we've been together
And we both know it's about to end
All I want to know is whether
I can still ring and call you friend

Remember when we met back at the uni
You were the centre of attention there
To see you in the arms of other men
Was often much more than I could bear

But you made clear you did not see me as a lover
You said I was your closest trusted friend
Oh how many years I hoped to win you over
How many years I continued to pretend

You always rang distraught to tell me
How you had been hurt by feral men
And the tears I knew that you were shedding
Were mirrored in the heart of the man you called your friend

But I persevered to try to win you over
Until you finally saw it in my eyes
That I saw you only as a lover
And friendship was just a convenient disguise

Eventually we foolishly got married
For years we seemed happy and content
Of course we were always so busy
Feeding our kids and trying to pay the rent

But there was a reason for your resistance
For all those years you called me friend
Because for you friendship was all there ever was
And now I finally see it in the end

You know I saw you at the restaurant
You had rung to say that you were working late
Imagine how my heart exploded
When I saw you in the arms of your ‘soul-mate'

Don't think that I am bitter
Disappointment and hopelessness is all I feel
Because fondness and fantasy falls over
When faced with love that's real

And you my friend have found love
That much is plain to see
Yes you have found love my love
But you are definitely not in love with me
But darling on this our last night together
Let us not cry or wallow about in sorrow
Locked together in embrace let us kiss and reminisce
For our little world will end tomorrow

And before tonight is ended
How many other tears will flow
For who will stop our children crying
When they find out that I must go

The night too quickly passes
We doze but cannot sleep
We hold each other tight till sadness overwhelms us
And in each other's arms we both begin to weep

And we lay there shattered devoid of hopes and dreams
Two car wrecks after impact, two hearts so full of sorrow
The pain so great, so dismal, so total
That I wish it was tomorrow

Outside the day dawns weary bleak and grey
And our night and life together is at an end
I must leave now as your husband
For there is nothing left to say

Except that you will be in my heart forever
And in my heart I will always be your friend
So good bye my sweet friend and true
Good bye and know I will always love you

While I live I will always love you
My ‘friend'.
