Thoreau, always the idealist, set the highest of standards in all facets of life: relationships, work, morals, etc, ...society's shortcomings, as he saw them, made a recluse of him at Walden Pond.

This poem takes me to the walden pond of my tears. Very moving, as if of anything true, and ingenuously portrayed.

Love is synonymous with deep friendship. Also can't be spoken of only a feeling and a knowing.

What a nice try to define love! So intensely a relation poet tries to define. Actually the relation like friendship has been observed by very deep ray of light where individualism and our existence....according to poet Down to their deepest source, .....Their roots are intertwined / Insep'rably. Very smart the expression yet so contemporary.

Thoreau was an idealist in matters of the heart and suffered great heartbreak after being rejected by a woman he loved, so he went to live in seclusion on Walden Pond. He loved this woman and wouldn't settle for anyone else. He lived his words.

Like a ring the words he said holding and protecting diamond/gems that is equal to friendship...I must agree with JH poetry, it has more romance flavors than friendship things in this write but wait....friendship also is kind of love shaped right so this is true. There is no doubt that this poem such a great write and filled with tenderness heart and softness words. Such beautiful write in details and classy_Unwritten Soul

Love! Yes, there is nothing greater then love, love makes best connection, my soul believes that love might be the best friendship that any heart can get..if love trully comes in your heart then hopefully will never leave your sight, all you need to is to open eyes and look around then love itself might open the door to other hearts..Love can be shared to anything by anyone, unlimited..

Surely it is one of the best poems of the poet. He solely deals with love not friendship. Love is the base of every relationship. The poet seems to be extremely realistic on the issue of love. Great poem with great sentiments. Excellent work of the poet. I must thank poemhunter for making us share this lovely poem.

even though the poem it self is old, the feelings and refernces to friendship are still as fresh today as they were when he put these thoughts on paper.

Without a doubt a well written Poem by Thoreau, Futhermore; it still seems to ring of the marrow of life no matter how bi-furcaited.

i agree.. though the different interpretations of the readers are important in recognizing the objectivity of the poem, we should still consider the poet's intentions for writing the poem.. personally, i am caught by the philosophical touch of the poem.. without reading it's comments yet, i've had a hunch that this is a philosopher's work.. and indeed.. philosophers, though they were generally considered as great thinkers, are most of the time called a psycho.. but giving it a second thought, those whose names have made great changes in the human knowledge of the world have been called weird and crazy during their life time.. say for instance, Jesus of Nazareth, Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei and many more.. I'm not saying that we should be crazy or wierd.. but it's about seeing the whole picture of an art work.. ^^

    its a nice poem
    with good rhyming
i think a poet writes his hearts feeling
as per the situation he/ she went in their lives
therefore if we read a poem in the way the poet wants to tell us while he was writing the poem what he must be thinking while he was writing
then i think that we will understand and like the poem :) :) :) :)
