Dished Out Poem by Susan Lacovara

Dished Out

He hungered then
So greatly
I could hear his stomach
Grumble from wanting
I fed him...
Hearty and heaping
Loving spoonfuls
Of sweet fruits and golden wine
Certain his insatiable appetite
Would welcome the feast

His soul, long famished
Apparent from the dim and dark
Of his searching eyes
I looked to bring him into sunlit fields
For to soak up the Earth's energy
Rejuvenate the emptiness of his heart
Calm the pains of malnourished joy

He ate...and ate...and ate
Barely leaving crumbs for me
Growing stronger as he filled his plate
Over and over again
I grew weak, losing the weight
of self awareness
As the feast reduced to
Survival of the fittest
