Casserole Poem by Darwin Henry Beuning

Casserole

Newly weds,
My Thailand wife and I
Back in the United States.

Weekly, we would shop
For groceries together.

Bea did not read or write English.
When shopping, she would rely on
Shape, size and color.

One day, arriving at the store,
I said, start shopping, I'll be back in a few.
Needed a haircut, close by.

Upon returning,
Bea had a cart full.
Shopping All done
Ready to go.

At the checkout
I unloaded the cart,
Item by item.

I noticed five small green cans.
I picked one up and asked,
What's this?
Bea explained, tuna fish.
I said, no dear - cat food!

I noticed a small white tube.
I asked, What's this?
Bea explained, tooth paste.
I said, no dear - skin care!

Shape, size and color the same,
But, a World of difference.

That night we almost ate
Cat Food Casserole.

It is quite a coincidence that you still shop at the Air Force Base. If I like a shop, I keep on going back.

This one actually made me chuckle. Maybe you should have called it Cat Food Casserole!

Kim, thanks for the comment! Another time many years ago when the children were young. Bea worked at Clover Club Foods on the processing line. Bea and I and our three children were enjoying out evening meal. She gave me a slip of paper to read for her. The note said: Would you like to go on a date.. From one of her male co-workers.. I explained the note to her. I guess she must have said NO, as we are still married. Probably another poem in the works, ha.
