Can I Be Poem by Tsholofelo Phakathi

Can I Be

CAN I BE

Can I be happy
happy to sing like birds in the morning
with those sweet voices,
Can I dance a dance of my own culture with no discrimination,
Can I be loved
with no dove
to hurt me,
Can I let you my story
with a strong
smile
on your face,
Can I walk down the street with pride
for I don't pay a price
to wave my hands to those boys,
Can I let you hold my hands with your innocent hands?
Can I let you touch me with no hurt to cause?

Can I be...
