A Sonnet on my previously unruly curls
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
I heard that an unknown gentleman asked of me
A lock of my hair
Like a knight in shining armour
I am convinced
Who will help me to get a nice paycheque.
What will my lock of hair
Promise a man, a PM or a President or a helpful staff member, who has so much
To give and to help cherish in people.
I tug at my hair in despair
For I would like it to mean
Something special for him,
In a way that is befitting to his position.
My hair has stood me in good stead
In dealing with both
Feminist and feminine aspects of my personality
Hence you must treat it gently, is my heartfelt plea
But I say, to my dearly cherished husband,
Let's not split hairs especially hair which is both long and fairly short
For if Rapunzel uses her hair to escape out of the humdrum of existence
And Cinderella fits into the shoe that matches her length of hair
And Sleeping Beauty says that there is a curse upon her hair
And Snow White has hair which is black as a raven who says "Nevermore Evermore"
Alice in Wonderland says that the Mad Hatter's ace up his sleeve is Tea Time with goodies
Or Coffee Time withdesserts.
