Sippin' on iced tea, walkin' slow,
sticky white T-shirts, gas on low.
Splishin', splashin'
jokin', laughin'.
...

Grew up on country simple, but so bitter,
West Virginia's wilds, daddy's cow sitter.
Couldn't wait to get on out, disembark,
leave that dusty old town, erase his mark.

It was those boots that reeled him in,
down memory lane, lettin' no one in.
Goin' back, early days, to that place—
comes along that slow smile 'cross his face.
...

Buckskin yellow, thick black tail,
dark, wise eyes that I know so well.
Quarter horse stock, lines so fine,
power, speed, stop on a dime.
...

Big Apple—rotten to the core.
Northern horizon—never felt the lore.
Big lights, big dreams, go big or go home.
Disliked, had none, y'all she's alone.

Cheated Outta Summer

Sippin' on iced tea, walkin' slow,
sticky white T-shirts, gas on low.
Splishin', splashin'
jokin', laughin'.
Hours in the park,
pushin' off the dark.
Bathed in the sunrays,
my kind of days.

Then it was sayin' my goodbye's to the 'Bama sun,
Mama's littlest sister had had her run.
Skiin' down slopes, then she was done.
Now it's up, up—way up, up,
forgoin' my summer, didn't get enough.

Headed up North, feel the temperature droppin',
cuttin' through Memphis, Chicago, Wisconsin.
Nineties gone, all traces vanished—
the clouds converge, my sun is banished.

Missin' out on summer,
Waitin' here for summer,
Never ever summer.
Wishin', hopin', prayin'
it were summer.
Rootin', bootin', shootin'
for a stunner.
Cheated outta summer.

The event was over, respects were paid.
I was so glad I'd see my summer rays.
Little did I know—far from over,
we all took cover, the storm named Dover,
blew on through, causin' so much wreckage,
airports closed, none clear for passage.

All 'round me witness of destruction.
This little town's braved this corruption.
The power's down, our wires fizzin',
cars cain't run, tree branches whizzin'.

Missin' out on summer,
Waitin' here for summer,
Never ever summer.
Wishin', hopin', prayin'
it were summer.
Rootin', bootin', shootin'
for a stunner.
Cheated outta summer.

Stuck here now, no date of gettin' back.
Truck won't start, it's outta whack.
No chance of brakes, forget the throttle.
Here's wishin' for sunshine in a bottle.

Way up here, only cold.
That chill ain't gettin' old.
Back home summer's in full swing,
but here you cain't tell a thing.
July or March, it don't matter,
when it's cold, things are badder.

Missin' out on summer,
Waitin' here for summer,
Never ever summer.
Wishin', hopin', prayin'
it were summer.
Rootin', bootin', shootin'
for a stunner.
Cheated outta summer.

Endless days, so many weeks,
I was headin' back finally.
Back down South, where sunshine grows,
home at last, done with the cold.
Sorry for me that it's September,
gone the summer, I won't remember.

Missin' out on summer,
Waitin' here for summer,
Never ever summer.
Wishin', hopin', prayin'
it were summer.
Rootin', bootin', shootin'
for a stunner.
Cheated outta summer.
