Dylan Thomas writes so well about many subjects, none more so than childhood and death.
No wonder Bob Dylan found his stage name in the Welsh poet.

All of his poems can have many different meanings, and it is cool to think that everyone could have a different perspective on what his poems are like.

I have been looking and reading this poem for a number of years. I am now 74 and am aware of mortality. We are probably the only species that are aware of our own demise. At least for me it is a difficult realization to absorb. Dylan’s poem seem to me to express the frustration of that reality. We behave, love go through life as if its forever. So it ain’t.

Fern Hill

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs
About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,
The night above the dingle starry,
Time let me hail and climb
Golden in the heydays of his eyes,
And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns
And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves
Trail with daisies and barley
Down the rivers of the windfall light.

And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns
About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home,
In the sun that is young once only,
Time let me play and ...

Before I Knocked

Before I knocked and flesh let enter,
With liquid hands tapped on the womb,
I who was as shapeless as the water
That shaped the Jordan near my home
Was brother to Mnetha's daughter
And sister to the fathering worm.

I who was deaf to spring and summer,
Who knew not sun nor moon by name,
